Greta Thunberg

Today we got to learn about Greta Thunberg. I have heard and know about her from before this trip, when she was very popular on social media a handful of years ago. I got the opportunity to learn more about her today from Professor Oscarson! Greta’s main concern is climate crisis. As background, Greta’s mom was an opera singer and sacrificed her career for her daughter. Every Friday, Greta would come next to the Parliament building talking about climate change. Being able to express her concern and talk with others was so important to her. Another notable thing Chip told us was that she is diagnosed with aspergers, and she doesn’t really speak. She said she only speaks when it’s something she feels is important, Chip told us. Learning more about her and her background of how she came to be influential was interesting!

I think there are a few things that made Greta’s contribution important, and changed her field as well as society. First, her relentless advocacy. She’s known for not backing down, and leading countless strikes that lead to global movements. Her efforts have inspired many, especially the youth, to demand policy changes and sustainable practices. In addition, her fight has shifted public discussion, making climate change a big topic in the politics and media. This impact she’s made has created change all over Sweden, as well as the rest of the world.

In my opinion, I don’t think this question really relates to Greta Thunberg, as she’s still alive. I have done a little bit of research and found out she has a statue at the University of Winchester. Although, it says it’s permanently closed, which makes me think they may have removed it. All of the sources I saw haven’t said if they are definitely bringing it back or not. I don’t necessarily think a statue is the right commemoration for Greta and her work. I think if it was some sort of tribute in the aspect of climate or the environment, that’d be best!

Bye!

  1. I loved learning from your blog post Sophie! I think that Greta Thunberg faced a lot of challenges with her age because she would not be treated as seriously. Also since she was a women she was treated differently. I believe that since this was so recent, these challenges still happen today, especially when people of young age try to make a difference.

  2. Greta experienced many obstacles as she fights whats right. Many of these include other peoples opinions of her. She has to prove to other people consistently that her opinions are valid and people continue to not take her seriously. Understanding Greta helps us to understand what Sweden stands for as a country and how they are politically.
