Stockholm woman of choice - Christina Gyllenstierna

Hello! Today we got a little walking tour from Chip, and I got to learn a lot. One of the woman we talked about was Christina Gyllenstierna, aka Kristina Golden Star. Like Chip said, she was a very respected leader of her time. She would go up and down the lines encouraging the troops. It was her force of will that held together the Swedish resistance against Christian II. Under her power, they drove the Danes out of Sweden. She did so much for the Swedish people that everyone still loves and respects her so much.

I think there are many things that make Christina Gyllenstierna’s contributions important. Her leadership during the Swedish war of liberation was very significant. Like I mentioned before, she effectively led the resistance against Christian II, the Danish King. Her defense of Stockholm inspired Sweden nationalism and also laid a base for eventually establishing the Swedish monarchy. Her actions have changed society by creating a new sense of unity and resistance, which contributes to Sweden’s state. In addition, her legacy lives in Swedish history as a symbol of patriotism and courage.

In my opinion, I do think Christina Gyllenstierna has been commemorated well. She has statues, as well as a couple street names, as Chip was talking about. I think these commemorations focus on and celebrate her achievements correctly, and highlight her role in Swedish history. I think her statue also brings awareness of her contributions and truly how important she was. Statues in public places provide a tangible, long lasting tribute to her and all of the positive impact she had on Sweden. This also educates the public and ensures her legacy continues on.

That’s all!

  1. I had no idea she had that nickname! Great post! I think that she really deepens our understanding of history because she was a stellar woman leader. I think this can inspire future generations to teach that women can succeed as power figures. Also she is a major part of Swedish history!

  2. Nice blog post!! I love that you mention all the things that Christina did for her country. Some of the things she is hampered by is because she is a woman she is constantly being harshly judged and mistreated. She did not get the recognition she deserved during her lifetime. However it shows how good of a cultural capital Sweden is because they are doing a good job at showing woman who have made a difference throughout their cities.

  3. Love your post girly! I think Christina Gyllenstierna faced a lot of obstacles in her efforts to defend Stockholm. She endured a lot of challenges of leading a military resistance as a woman in a male-dominated society as well as dealing with the overwhelming force of Christian II’s army and rule. I would expect that her gender likely hampered her ability to to command and lead which probably made her struggle even more difficult. I wish we could see more women in leadership roles today like Christina.
