Balinese Food
Today I got to try Balinese food! It was a really cool experience. The first thing I noticed during the dinner, which Dr Pratt also mentioned, was how they served the food. It was similar to family style, where everyone at the table just shares all the different foods. There were different meats and veggies that we paired with white rice. There were many different colors and textures, like a yellowish kind of slimy chicken. It was actually soooo good. I had never tried Balinese food before, and it was definitely something I wasn’t used to, but I really enjoyed it and I’m glad I got to try it!
I think Balinese food is important to Amsterdam both historically and culturally for a few reasons. First, it brings in and represents the global dispersion of Balinese food and culture. It shows a wider audience the rich flavors and textures, and even traditions. It also allows people who may not ever travel to Bali to still be able to experience Balinese food. Another aspect is that it plays a role in preserving traditional cooking methods and ingredients. Last, it gives an opportunity for cultural celebration and brings a sense of community between all different people.
Balinese food contributes to this city’s status as a cultural capital in a few different ways. First, it offers a taste of Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage, and allows both tourists and locals to appreciate and celebrate the diversity. Second, the authentic experience it is allows for cultural exchange and a better understanding! Third, the different types of dishes add to Amsterdam’s cultural scene, allowing it to be a spot people come to if they want to experience authentic international foods, enriching the city’s status as a cultural capital.
Yum!!

Hey Sophie! I love how you mentioned the cultural exchange and diversity that Balinese food brings to Amsterdam. By having more diversity and paying tribute to Amsterdam’s culinary heritage through Balinese food, Amsterdam uses food to strengthen the city’s position as a cultural capital and draws in more visitors.
