Simone de Beauvoir

Simone de Beauvoir was a French writer and feminist thinker. Her most famous work was “The Second Sex”, which was about the status of women throughout history and laid the foundation of modern feminist theory. Her philosophy went into themes of freedom, individual responsibility, and choice. She was a woman in acadamedia in philosophy when it was a predominantly male field. In addition to her literary contributions, she was also an activist for women’s rights, advocating for reproductive rights as well as social equality. Her legacy goes further than her novels, memoirs, and essays, making her a known and impactful figure even into todays world. My reaction is that what she believed and stood for was great for this world. She impacted the way that females are able to live and work, which we still see today. 


Simone de Beauvoir’s contribution was pivotal for a handful of reasons. First, her work “The Second Sex” challenged the norms we have, including gender roles and societal structures. She paved the way to think about gender and how we live. This work of hers inspired a feminist movement, inspiring generations to advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. Her activism and writing sparked critical conversations about women’s education, and reproductive rights, contributing to legislative changes. Overall, her legacy is transformative, reshaping not only her field but also society’s perception of gender and power dynamics. 


In my opinion, she kind of has been commemorated very well. Yes in the aspect of her actions and what she stood for allowed women now to be more involved in academia. Her achievements also changed the way we can think about gender. No in the aspect of the physical objects. She didn’t have any crazy physical objects to celebrate her and her achievements, which I thought was interesting. I think they could commemorate her a little better in terms of physical things, but her contributions allowed women to have advancements which is a great way to carry on her legacy.

    Sophie, I totally agree with your opinion about Simone de Beauvoir! Simone brought in the idea that women are overlooked and males and female play a part to this. She wanted Paris to be about everyone except for males and she wanted females to be equal to males. She knew females could bring some many things to Paris and wanted to tie women to the city cultural.

Today I got the opportunity to learn about Lise Meitner! To be completely honest, I knew a little about her, but not a ton. So it was super interesting to learn more about her from MaryAnn! Maryann told us she was born in October of 1878 in Vienna. She went to the University of Austria and was the second woman to graduate from there in physics. Käthe Kollwitz

Today we got the opportunity to learn about Käthe Kollwitz! I knew a little bit about her before coming to Berlin, and I’m so grateful I got to learn more! Rob and MaryAnn taught us a lot before going into her museum, and here’s what I learned. She was an artist, and her dad noticed her artistic talent from a young age. She had a good education for the time, and went to an art school. She didn’t love color, but she loved lithographs and charcoal. She met Karl Kollwitz, but her family didn’t want her to marry him because they thought she wouldn’t be able to do her art because she had to do housework. However, Karl did housework to make sure that didn’t happen. They had 3 sons, and one of them died in WWI. She became depressed after this and started changing the type of art she made. Madrid woman of choice - Emilia Pardo Bazán

For my woman of choice in Madrid, I chose to write about Emilia Pardo Bazán. She was the first woman to become a professor at the University of Madrid. She was a literary professor and wrote articles about literature. Male professors were mad because they weren’t supposed to have women professors at the school. So, they boycotted her lectures. This resulted in a very very small attendance of students because the men wouldn’t work with them and sign off on their thesis’ if they attended. This just pushed her more. She was a great female realist and naturalist writer. She wrote stories about adventure, fantastic stories, stories about women, children’s stories, and even Christmas stories. She was the second woman to be a member of the literary club in Madrid.
