Skansen Open Air Museum

Today we got the opportunity to go to the Skansen Open Air Museum! This was such a cool experience, and it was so fun. There were food spots, rides and little activities, all different types of animals, crafts, music, the list goes on and on! Rob told us that this was the first open air museum which was super interesting to learn. Once we were in, I went with a little group to get food because we were starving (hahah). We got food at this area that had a bunch of little trucks! We got to see a lot of Skansen and all that it has to offer. I thought this was such a great experience. We got to see the first open air museum, and see how it impacts Stockholm and its culture!

I believe The Skansen Open Air Museum is important both historically and culturally. It preserves and showcases traditional Swedish life, craftsmanship, architecture, and offers a link straight to the past. It features historic buildings from all across Sweden, which allows visitors to experience Swedish culture and history firsthand. Skansen also has a lot of different cultural events like folk events and festivals, which creates a learning of culture. Skansen not only guards Sweden's heritage, but also promotes an appreciation and understanding of Swedish cultural evolution.

In my opinion, Skansen contributes to Stockholm’s status as a cultural capital in many different ways. First, it preserves and showcases Swedish cultural heritage. It offers a different perspective and experience of Swedish historical and cultural lifestyle and traditions through crafts, music, animals, etc. Skansen also hosts many cultural events and festivals which gives a vibrant, fun, platform for learning more about traditions. By blending the past and present, Skansen creates cultural appreciation and education, making Stockholm a popular destination for those interested in Swedish history and culture.

Yay!

  1. I love what you said about the importance of blending the past and present. Skansen is almost a sort of "time machine" into Swedish history. Though Skansen is obviously modern and has modern aspects like the aquarium and carnival rides, the vast majority of the park is filled with buildings and objects from the past few-hundred years. It is cool because though we are obviously in the present, we can pretend that we are in the past and experience Swedish culture for ourselves firsthand.

  2. I love this post Sophie! I love that you talk about how Skansen shows different events that help to contribute to Sweden culturally. I also love that you talk about the craftsmanship and architecture of the building as well. I thought Skansen was so cool because even the people were dressed in traditionally Sweden clothes.
